The NJSA would like to recognize Nathan Joostberns of Hamilton, Michigan as a youth spotlight. Dave and Tracy Joostberns are the proud parents of 20 year old Nathan and his 16 year old brother Austin. Nathan is a Junior at Grand Valley State University studying Marketing and Management. When not studying Nathan is an avid hunter and finds time to coach football at his old high school.
Nathan has been showing pigs ever since he showed his first pig at his county fair when he was 9 years old. Nathan says he started showing pigs with the help of his parents and grandpa. He enjoys showing as not only does he get to spend time with his family, but he gets to make connections with some of the best people in the country. Nathan also enjoys seeing all of his families, and all of his friends’ hard work pay off.
Nathan has been a NJSA member for 9 great years and in that time he has competed in several shows including: the NJSS, World Pork Expo, and the Eastern Regional. His most memorable moments were winning the intermediate sweepstakes and watching Gold Standard sell. Nathan’s favorite NJSA show is the NJSS, when asked why he replied “Everyone brings their ‘A’ game and because it’s a long week so it’s like a vacation.” His favorite NJSA contests are showmanship and the skillathon because it requires more than just raising and feeding pigs.
Nathan would like tell younger members of the NJSA that “It’s one of the greatest organizations you’ll ever be privileged to be a part of, you’ll meet great people, compete in great competitions, and be provided with great opportunities.” In the immediate future Nathan is on the search for a summer internship and once he finishes school next spring he will be on the look for a full time job.
The NJSA would like to congratulate Nathan on all of his past accomplishments and wish him the best of luck for the future!
