Huntsville, Texas
Ryan Sockwell is the 16 year old son of Jeff and Carolyn Sockwell. He lives in Huntsville, Texas and is currently attending Conroe High School in Conroe, Texas. He has a younger brother Davin who is 8 years old.
In school Ryan enjoys FFA and building Ag Mechanics Projects. His hobbies out of school include showing hogs on the TJLA circuit and working on his truck and hanging out with friends.
Ryan has been very successful in his show career and has accomplished the following; Grand Champion Spotted/Poland China Breeding Gilt at the Houston Livestock Show, 10th place Intermediate showman at World Pork Expo, Champion Junior showman at the Fort Worth Livestock Show Breeding Swine Show, Junior Director on the Texas Junior Livestock Association Board, as well as the Texas Club Pig Association for 4 years completing his 5th year this year.
Ryan started off his showing career in 2004 and his favorite shows include the World Pork Expo, Houston Livestock Show, San Antonio Livestock Show, the Belt Buckle Bonanza, and the TJLA Fall Classic.
He says the reason why he shows pigs is because he likes meeting new people and trying to see if he can find that special animal that the judge is looking for. He also likes the responsibility that it teaches everyone. Ryan says that meeting new people is his favorite aspect and he has met 3 of his best friends at a show. He also likes continuing the agriculture way of life.
Ryan says that he would tell the NJSA members, that the NJSA is one of the best livestock organizations out there and that it gives you the opportunity to meet some and compete with the best in the nation. His most memorable moment in the NJSA was the time that he showed at the Expo and placed 10th in the intermediate showmanship.
His immediate plans are to be the President of the Conroe FFA chapter, and then attend Tulsa Welding School before going to college to major in Agriculture Education. He wants to be a professional welder and pay his way through school while pursuing his dream of being an Agriculture Teacher. Right now Ryan is a junior at Conroe High School where he is the Vice President of the Conroe FFA Chapter, and is on the show team, livestock judging team, and Ag Mechanics project show team. He also shows on the Texas Junior Livestock Association circuit.
A quote that all of can remember Ryan by and that he likes to follow in his everyday life is; “Leadership is doing what’s right when no one else is looking”.
