Gilt Eligibility Requirements:
DUROC
The color marking of all Duroc breeding hogs for registration shall be red. Disqualifications for registry: (1) white feet or white spots on any part of the body with the exception of the end of the nose; (2) black spots, no more than three, none more than two inches in diameter on the body; (3) ridgeling (one testicle) boar; (4) less than six functional udder sections on each side of the underline; (5) evidence of an extra dewclaw.
HAMPSHIRE
Hampshire boars and gilts must meet the requirements (except color markings), along with the following to be eligible to show in a breeding animal class. Animal can have white on its nose as long as the white does not break the rim of the nose and when its mouth is closed, the white under the chin can NOT exceed what a U.S. minted quarter will cover. White is allowed on the rear legs as long as it does NOT extend above the tuber calis bone (knob of the hock). (2) Must have at least six functional udder sections on each side of the underline. (3) Must NOT have any evidence of an extra dewclaw.
Hampshire swine classified as off-belts may be used for breeding purposes, with offspring eligible for registration with the National Swine Registry. This policy is retroactive and will allow litters to be registered that were not eligible previously, due to the Hampshire Swine Registry off-belt requirements.

However, a small amount of black pigmentation is allowed on the body of the animal.
YORKSHIRE
The presence of one or more of the following disqualifies Yorkshire pigs from registry: (a) less than six teats on a side, (b) any hair other than white on any part of the animal’s body, (c) total blindness, (d) hernia or ruptures, (e) hermaphroditism, (f) cryptorchidism, (g) one testicle or any pronounced abnormal condition of the testicles, (h) black spots in the skin are very objectionable and any large spots or numerous black spots located on any part of the hog makes the pig ineligible for registry or (i) evidence of an extra dewclaw. -
No microphone will be available to contestants.
Method of Judging
-
The NSR Chief Executive Officer and the NSR Director of Junior Activities will be in charge of selecting three competent and impartial judges to evaluate the contestants.
-
Speaking order will be determined by drawing lots and will be posted prior to the contest.
-
Contestants will be permitted to use notes. Excessive reference may result in a deduction of the contestant’s score.
-
The use of visual aids (charts, slides, signs, etc.) is NOT permitted.
-
Judges shall receive copies of the manuscripts 30 minutes prior to the contest so the general idea of the speeches may be reviewed before actual presentation.
-
The contestant will be scored 40 percent on speech content and organization, and 60 percent on presentation.
-
The judges will ask questions after each speech. Contestants will be scored on their ability to respond effectively.
-
Upon completion of all speeches, and without consultation, each judge shall total his/her score of the manuscript and presentation for each speaker. Contest officials will then collect the score sheets, deduct points if necessary for time violations and rank the contestants in numerical order on the basis of each judge’s scores. (Highest scores first, lowest scores last).
-
The rankings, not the score, of the three judges shall be added for each speaker, and the final placings will be determined by the lowest composite rankings. Actual scores will be used only to break ties.

Contestants must be members of the NJSA.
-
Senior and intermediate participants are eligible for this contest.
-
Participants must register on the NJSS entry form and check-in by the designated time on the form.
Time Limit
-
Each speech must be between two to six minutes in length with three minutes additional time allowed for related questions, which shall be asked by the judges.
-
A junior board member shall introduce the participant, and the participant may introduce their speech by title only.

The speaker may use a watch to keep record of their time. No time warnings will be given by event officials or observers.
Subjects
-
The selection of the topics shall be held 30 minutes before the event. The participant will draw two specific topics, selected at random from one pool of six, relating to the industry of agriculture and/or purebred Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace or Yorkshire swine. Participants will enter preparation room at 10-minute intervals with 30 minutes for topic selection and preparation.

Participants must use the uniform note cards provided. Any notes for speaking must be made during preparation time.

this event.) Copies must reference the origination point.
Event Procedures
-
The Director of Junior Activities will randomly draw the speaking order and post it prior to the event.
-
The participant may use notes while speaking, but scoring deductions may be made if it detracts from the presentation’s effectiveness.
-
A timekeeper will record each participant’s speech time, noting undertime and overtime, if any, for which deductions will be made.
-
Three competent and impartial judges will be selected to judge the event.
-
Each judge shall ask questions. Questions shall pertain directly to the speaker’s subject. Questions containing two or more parts should be avoided. Judges will score each participant on the ability to answer all questions asked by all judges. The full three minutes should be used.
-
When all participants have finished speaking, each judge will total the score. The timekeeper’s record will be used in computing the final score for each participant. The judge’s score sheets will then be submitted to the event officials to determine the final rankings of the participants.
-
Participants shall be ranked in numerical order on the basis of the final score to be determined by each judge without consultation. The judge’s ranking of each participant will be added together and the winner will be the participant whose total of rankings is the lowest. In the case of a tie, that individual who has the highest grand total score shall have the higher rating. If they are still tied, they shall be named co-winners and two awards given for that placing.
-
No microphone will be available to contestants.

-
The rankings (not the score) of the three judges shall be added for each entry, and the final placing determined by the lowest composite rankings. Actual scores will be used only to break ties. In the event the participants are still tired, they shall be named co-winners and two awards will be given for that placing and note given for the following placing.
-
Scoresheets are available by contacting the NJSA office.
