August 2003 Highlights

Pull on Those Boots
by Christy Couch Lee, NSR Director of Communications

Just the other morning, while enjoying breakfast, I was captivated by the beautiful Illinois summer sunrise. The rays of sun glistening from the silky tass le s of the growing cornfields… the cannas on the verge of showcasing their brilliant red and yellow blooms and our Angus cow and calf dining in my flower bed?

Quickly, I grabbed my husband, toothbrush dangling haphazardly from his mouth. I pulled on my work boots with my skirt and business attire, and out we went to round up our four-legged breakfast guests.

As you all well know, often we must “pull on our work boots” to get the job done. And, Dan Baker has left some mighty big shoes to fill.

In my two short months as the Director of Communications for the National Swine Registry, I have come to learn of the legacy of excellence Baker has left with this association.

He’s certainly a tough act to follow.

My trips to the World Pork Expo in June and the National Junior Summer Spectacular and Summer Type Conference last month in Louisville have been a great chance to meet the amazing people that make up the NSR.

Thank you for providing such a warm welcome!

It is such an honor to work for you, a group of breeders and swine enthusiasts who have such a passion for and knowledge of your industry.

I look forward to learning from you and working to help you advance your communications to even greater levels.

Those of you who I had the chance to chat with have a great knowledge of the industry, and of some things you’d like to see from us in the future. We will certainly work to meet your needs.

We in the NSR communications department have big plans for the future of your publications and promotions.

In the coming months, you will notice some changes – some minor, some a bit more noticable.

We’re rolling up our sleeves to continually improve the communications we provide for you.

Our primary focus will be to equip you with the best tools to market your product to other NSR members, and to the swine industry as a whole.

I would be hard pressed to count the number of times I heard at the shows and sales that the arrival of the Seedstock EDGE in your homes is a much-anticipated event.

We certainly will work to preserve the features of your publication that you like.

Seedstock EDGE will continue to provide you with the latest news, information and advertisements.

We also plan to incorporate more features and marketing articles to help you get the most from your operation.

And, we want to hear from you! Look for a readership survey in next month’s issue of Seedstock EDGE .

Please take a few minutes to respond to the questions and drop the survey in the mail (yes, I promise, it will only take a few minutes).

Your feedback now will help us provide you with the type and quality of information you need in the future.

We’re also in the process of giving the NSR Web site a fresh look.

Our goal is to make navigation easier, all while providing a more-updated look to draw in more members and potential customers for you.

And, plans are in place to implement the best processes to notify various media – including your hometown newspaper – of upcoming NSR events, and of your successes in the sale and show rings across the nation.

We are also working to ensure that the  NSR is promoted to the swine industry as a whole in the most-effective ways, through the most-effective mediums.

If you have any comments or suggestions on any of the communication services we provide, please call, or send me an e-mail at christy@nationalswine.com.

We’re building upon the foundation of quality communications that has been established for decades.

Yes, we’re pulling on our work shoes, and heading out to make some changes. Let the building begin!
