Brian Lockman, son of Steve and Janice Lockman, has been involved with the swine industry for more than 15 years. His interest started when his dad bought a couple of sows to breed from their neighbor. Brian promptly named them Corncob (because she liked corncobs) and Jennifer (his sister’s name is Jennifer). Those 2 pigs started a legacy that has continued to the present.
After his first year of 4-H, he started showing market pigs in addition to his breeding pigs. The family began a breeding program to produce top quality breeding pigs and market show pigs so Brian and his sister Jennifer could pick out their show pigs from their own herd. He continued with the purebreds and added crossbreds. At Colorado State Fair, only 35 hogs out of the entire show (usually about 450-500 pigs) sell in the sale and Brian was able to make sale 4 of his 10 years showing.
Brian was also very active in his county 4-H and FFA judging programs. This past year his FFA team won the state contest and was able to participate in the National FFA Contest. He also competed in FFA Meats judging and was on the 2nd high team at state. Brian recently received his Chapter and State FFA Degrees and a gold Proficiency Award for Swine Production.
Brian has participated in many NJSA events including the Southwest Regional, NJSS, Western Regional, WPX Junior National, and the NJSA National Youth Leadership Conference.
Brian will be a sophomore next fall at
