Most wouldn’t necessarily consider Kansas to be a pig Mecca. However, Thatcher Moddie of Burlington, Kan., has certainly triumphed there in his short showing career.

Thatcher is the 13-year-old son of Everett and Stacey Moddie. He is currently a seventh grader at Burlington Middle School, where he plays football and track. When he is not in school, Thatcher shows pigs. He has been showing pigs for the past six years and this is his third year in the NJSA.

Thatcher’s fondest moment of showing pigs is when he captured grand champion honors at his county fair. “I was really excited,” he says.

His favorite NJSA competition is showmanship. Even though he has only been able to go to the Southwest Regional, he really wants to come to the National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., someday.

After high school, Thatcher plans to attend University of Oklahoma to major in business. Some would prefer to see him in orange, but he says, “I have always wanted to be a Sooner.”

I had the privilege of catching up with him at the 2008 Regional Leadership Conference in Des Moines, Iowa, in February and it is easy to see that Thatcher has awesome goals at a young age. Without question, he will reach them! Good luck in the future Thatcher and keep up the good work!
