SKILLATHON
JUNIORS TEST SWINE KNOWLEDGE IN SKILLATHON
During the National Junior Summer Spectacular Skillathon, held July 5 in Louisville, Ky., participants put their swine knowledge to use, while performing a variety of tasks, including ear notching, identifying meat cuts and answering questions on current issues in agriculture.
Mark Wongrowski, Pemberville, Ohio, won the senior division. In the intermediate division, Tyler Sanders, Nappanee, Ind., took home top honors. The champion in the junior skillathon was Kane Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill. The novice title was captured by Payton Hines, Quincy, Mich. The first place in each division received a chair, second place received a bag, and the third through fifth place participants were awarded a silver photo frame.

JUDGING CONTEST
The judging contest at the National Junior Summer Spectacular, held in Louisville, Ky., drew in more than 275 contestants on July 7. The seniors, intermediates and juniors evaluated six classes. Seniors gave three sets of oral reasons, intermediates gave one set and answered two classes of questions, and juniors answered two sets of questions. The novice contestants judged two classes and answered questions on one class.
The high individual in the senior division was Brian Down, Cabery, Ill., with a score of 437 out of 450. The top intermediate judging title was captured by Courtney Smith, Michigantown, Ind., with a score of 421 out of 450. Kane Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill., finished first in the junior division with a score of 345 out of 400. The novice high individual was Hailey Robinson, El Reno, Okla., with a score of 110 out of 150.

The champion intermediate judging team, 3 Dwarves, consisted of Kaley Bontrager, Nappanee, Ind.; Alyssa Smith, Michigantown, Ind.; Brant Smith, Michigantown, Ind.; and Courtney Smith, Michigantown, Ind. Their team scored 1,658 out of 1,800.

The second-place intermediate team was Team Illinois with a score of 1,606. Team members were Ryan Giertz, New Windsor, Ill.; Andy Frerichs, Clifton, Ill.; Tyler Loschen, Kempton, Ill.; and Emily Weinberg, Trenton, Ill.

The champion junior judging team, Illini Force, consisted of Orin Allen, Homer, Ill.; Kane Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Caitlyn Bowyer, Lawrenceville, Ill.; Kane Weinberg, Trenton, Ill. Their team scored 1,316 out of 1,600 points.

The second-place junior team was Git-R-Dun with a score of 1,165. Team members included Kaylin Listen, El Reno, Okla.; Brianna Robinson, El Reno, Okla.; Brooke Robinson, El Reno, Okla.; and Josh Robinson, El Reno, Okla.

The champion novice judging team, Ill/IN/MI/CO, consisted of Adrian Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Cailyn Hines, Quincy, Mich.; Cole Horner, Shobonier, Ill.; and Landan Yount, Columbia City, Ind. Their team scored 298 out of 600.

The second-place novice team was Midwest Men with a score of 292. Team members were Aaron Cain, Chariton, Iowa; Cody Clyburn, Bloomingburg, Ohio; T.J. Parks, Wilmington, Ohio; and Will Robinson, Wellsville, Mo.

SPEECH CONTEST
Participants voiced their opinions about the swine industry July 7 during the National Junior Summer Spectacular Speech Contest and Extemporaneous Speaking Contest, which took place at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Ky.
Hope Ballman, Leitchfield, Ky., was named the champion extemporaneous speaker and received a leather briefcase.
Emily Byers, Hoschton, Ga., was named the champion speaker in the senior speech contest with her speech titled, “Pigs are Friends." Click here to read a manuscript of Emily's speech.
In the intermediate division, Andy Frerichs, Clifton, Ill., finished first with his speech called, “The Effects of Postweaning Multi-Systemic Wasting Syndrome.” Click here to read a manuscript of Andy's speech.

The first-place senior received a leather briefcase and a $300 scholarship, second place received a leather padfolio and a $200 scholarship, and third place received a $100 scholarship. PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
The National Junior Summer Spectacular Photography Contest, held July 5 in Louisville, Ky., was a success with more than 100 entries. Natalie Korniak, Logansport, Ind., was awarded Best of Show and received a camera. The best photo overall in the senior division was from Ashley Hop, Templeton, Calif. The best photograph in the intermediate division was captured by Konni Kelso, Seguin, Texas. The top junior photograph was taken by Korniak. In the novice division, Jackson Merritt, Carthage, Ill., took home the honors for best photo.
Contestants were allowed to enter one entry in each of the following categories: general agriculture, humor, people and swine. All photographs, except those in the general agriculture division, were expected to have a swine theme. Winning photographs will be featured on the National Swine Registry’s Web site, www.nationalswine.com. The winners will also appear in Seedstock EDGE.

During the National Junior Summer Spectacular, held July 4-8 in Louisville, Ky., participants put their design skills to work in the first-ever National Junior Swine Association Poster Contest.
Participants were asked to use hand drawing, magazine clippings or stencils to design a poster based on breed or association promotion or membership recruitment.

Aaron Gaskill, Monroe, Ind., claimed first-place overall with his entry from the senior division. Amy Loschen, Kempton, Ill., took home second-place overall with her junior-division entry.
Colby Oliver, Welsh, La., placed first in the novice division, and the judges named Wesley Hayes, Elton, La., first in the intermediate division.

Record numbers of gilts and exhibitors highlighted the ninth-annual National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky. With more than 530 participants representing 30 states, the race to win the Overall Sweepstakes Award was close to the end. The award is based on a combination of points from the gilt show, showmanship contest, skillathon and judging contest.

The senior sweepstakes award was presented to Nathan Ray, Cameron, Ill., who took home a $1,000 scholarship from Case IH, $500 and a belt buckle. Brian Down, Cabery, Ill., finished second in the senior sweepstakes contest. He received a pewter plate and $400. Alan Duttlinger, Hebron, Ind., took home the third-place prize. He was awarded a pewter plate and $300. Fourth place went to Doug Albright, Coldwater, Mich. He received a pewter plate and $200. Katie Dillon, Washington C.H., Ohio, received fifth place, a pewter plate and $100. The top five senior winners also received a free registration to the 2007 NJSA leadership conference from Pfizer. The newly elected Central Region director is Aimee Shaffer, Albany, Ind. Shaffer, 19, is the daughter of Terry and Michelle Shaffer. She is a sophomore at Purdue University majoring in agricultural communications.
Ashley Helmuth, Lone Oak, Texas, and Nick Hofschulte, Wyandotte, Okla., will be serving as the new Southwest Region directors. Helmuth, 17, is the daughter of Freddy Helmuth. She will be entering her senior year of high school and plans to attend Texas A&M to major in animal science and eventually become a veterinarian. Hofschulte, 17, is the son of Phillip and Jan Hofschulte. He will be a freshman at Connors State College this fall and will participate on the college’s livestock judging team.
The new At-Large director is Doug Albright, Coldwater, Mich. Albright, 21, is the son of Pat and Colleen Albright and will be a sophomore at Black Hawk East College, majoring in agriculture transfer.
Returning to the NJSA Board of Directors for one more year of service are President Matthew Lawson, Sidney, Ohio; Vice President Jamey Albrecht, Crawfordsville, Ind.; Secretary Hayley Wertenberger, Claypool, Ind.; Eastern Region Director Emily Byers, Hoschton, Ga.; and Western Region Director Brian Lockman, Kersey, Colo.
The NJSA Board of Directors serves the organization by setting goals for future activities, organizing events, and raising funds to support their national and regional shows and scholarship programs.
