The champion junior judging team, Illini Pirates, consisted of Kane Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Caitlyn Bowyer, Sumner, Ill.; Kane Weinberg, Trenton, Ill.; and Jessica Awe, Elkhart, Ill. Their team scored 984 out of 1,050 points.

The second-place junior team was M-Cats with a score of 949. Team members included Mallory Butler, Vincennes, Ind.; Cara Bowyer, Sumner, Ill.; Trey Fecke, Bonfield, Ill.; and Amy Loschen, Kempton, Ill.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
The National Junior Summer Spectacular Photography Contest, held July 4, was a success with more than 180 entries. Britney Adam, Lathrop, Mo., was awarded Best of Show and received a camera. The best photo overall in the senior division was from Mark Lashley, Bainbridge, Ga. The best photograph in the intermediate division was captured by Bailey Pope, Lathrop, Mo. The top junior photograph was taken by Adam. In the novice division, Jacob Hassien, Sulphur, La.., took home the honors for best photo.
Contestants were allowed to enter one entry in each of the following categories: general agriculture, humor, people and swine. All photographs, except those in the general agriculture division, were expected to have a swine theme. Winning photographs will be featured in the September Showpig issue of Seedstock EDGE.

STATE DISPLAY CONTEST
Participating states had the opportunity to create displays representing themselves.
Displays were judged according to five categories, including creativity, eye appeal, theme, educational value and neatness. Awards were given to those states whose displays were the best in each category, and one award was given to the best overall display.

This year’s Best Overall State Display was awarded to California for its highly creative, educational representation of the state and the state’s 2007 NJSS participants.

The Most Creative State Display was awarded to Indiana

The Most Educational Display went to Michigan.

Oklahoma won the award for the Cleanest State Display.

Rounding out the awards with the Best State Display Theme was Florida.
SWEEPSTAKES CONTEST

The senior sweepstakes award was presented to Brian Down, Cabery, Ill., who took home a $1,000 scholarship, $500 and a belt buckle. Nathan Ray, Cameron, Ill., finished second in the senior sweepstakes contest. He received a pewter plate and $400. Katie Dillon, Martinsville, Ind., took home the third-place prize. She was awarded a pewter plate and $300. Fourth place went to Cassidy Hayes, Port Lavaca, Texas, who received a pewter plate and $200. Jennifer Babbs, Cabery, Ill., received fifth place, a pewter plate and $100. In the intermediate division, the champion award was presented to Brant Smith, Michigantown, Ind. He received a belt buckle and check for $500. A second-place pewter plate and $400 was awarded to Austin Denhart, Crawfordsville, Ind. The third-place award of a pewter plate and $300 went to Brock Herren, El Reno, Okla. Kendall Smith, Indianapolis, Ind., received fourth place, a pewter plate and $200. Fifth place was awarded to Nathan Joostberns, Dorr, Mich. He received a pewter plate and $100. Other award winners were Ryan Giertz, New Windsor, Ill., sixth; Kaley Bontrager, Nappanee, Ind., seventh; Chris Hofschulte, Wyandotte, Okla., eighth; Miles Toenyes, Highland, Ill., ninth; Konni Kelso, Seguin, Texas, tenth.

The junior sweepstakes award was captured by Caitlyn Bowyer, Sumner, Ill. She was awarded a belt buckle and check for $500. Second-place awards went to Kane Weinberg, Trenton, Ill. He received a pewter plate and $400. Finishing third and receiving a pewter plate and $300 was Maddie Butler, Vincennes, Ind. Austin Joostberns, Dorr, Mich., placed fourth and won a pewter plate and $200. The fifth-place winner was Kane Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill. He received a pewter plate and $100. The other top winners were Trey Fecke, Bonfield, Ill., sixth; Matthew Evans, Jamestown, Ohio, seventh; Pat Arkfeld, Dunbar, Neb., eighth; Cole Riddle, Marysville, Ohio, ninth; and Abby Shelton, Tipton, Ind., tenth.

In the novice division, the champion award was presented to Gracie Flaspohler, Batesville, Ind. She received a belt buckle and $500 check. A second-place pewter plate and $400 check were presented to Adrian Austin, Mt. Vernon, Ill. The third-place award of a pewter plate and $300 went to Maddie Fugate, Mahomet, Ill. Cailyn Hines, Quincy, Mich. received fourth place, a pewter plate and $200. Fifth place was presented to Ashtin Guyer, West York, Ill. She received a pewter plate and $100. The remaining novice winners were Payton Hines, Quincy, Mich., sixth; Micah Malcolm, Garrett, Ind., seventh; Colby Oliver, Welsh, La., eighth; Wesley Murphy, New Paris, Ohio, ninth; and Dylan Cain, Chariton, Iowa, tenth.

THE NEW NJSA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

National Junior Swine Association members gathered on July 5, to elect five new directors to serve their organization at the National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky.
The newly elected Central Region director is Bryant Boyer, Kempton, Ind. Boyer, 20, is the son of Mark and Janet Boyer. He is a sophomore at Oklahoma State University, majoring in animal science.
Hyatt Frobose, Pemberville, Ohio, and Garrett Hamby, Williamsport, Md., will be serving as the new Eastern Region directors. Frobose, 20, is the son of Daniel and Vicki Frobose. He will be entering his junior year of Kansas State University, majoring in animal science and minoring in agricultural economics. Hamby, 17, is the son of Ralph and Amy Hamby. He will be a freshman at the University of Maryland this fall and will major in animal science.
Kayla Wood, San Jose, Calif., is the new Western Region director. The 18-year-old is the daughter of Ken and Leslie Wood. She will be a freshman at Modesto Junior College in the fall, where she will major in agriculture business and minor in animal science.
The new At-Large director is AJ Lanier, Phillipsburg, Kan. Lanier, 17, is the son of Jim and Becky Lanier and will be a senior at Phillipsburg High School. He plans to attend Kansas State University to major in mechanical engineering.
Returning to the NJSA Board of Directors for one more year of service are President Aimee Shaffer, Albany, Ind.; Vice President Ashley Hop, Templeton, Calif.; Secretary Doug Albright, Coldwater, Mich.; and Southwest Region Director Nick Hofschulte, Wyandotte, Okla.
The NJSA Board of Directors serves the organization by setting goals for future activities, organizing events, and raising funds to support their national and regional shows and scholarship programs.
