Show Rules and Regulations

General Entry Requirements

1. All purebred gilt and barrow exhibitors will pay an entry fee of $25 per head that will be listed on the individual entry form. All crossbred gilt and barrow exhibitors will pay an entry fee of $35 per head that will be listed on the individual entry form. Late entries will be $50 per head.
2. Two head per sex per breed will be allowed to enter per exhibitor.
3. In order to show a crossbred barrow or gilt, the exhibitor must also show (not just enter) a purebred barrow.
4. The top two placing crossbred gilts from each class at the WPX Jr. National must be offered for sale in a special sale managed by NSR. Other exhibitors may consign their crossbred gilts for a $25 fee.
5. All participants who do not show a gilt or barrow at this event will need to pay a participation fee of $5 if they wish to exhibit in showmanship and/or the judging contest.
6. All hogs must be identified with a permanent ear notch.  All crossbred barrows and gilts must have an ear tag and be identified on the health papers with the ear notch and tag number. 
7. Powdering, oiling or any dressing applied to hogs other than water will not be allowed. Exhibitors may be asked to take their animals to the wash racks by show officials to remove dressing. Show officials reserve the right to disqualify any animal from competition not meeting this requirement. Whole body clipping of market hogs is discouraged.
8. Absolutely no clipping of hogs will be allowed on the show grounds.
9. WPX Jr. National hogs to be sold to market must sign up by the end of check-in on Wednesday. Additions after check-in will be charged a $20 penalty to be deducted from their sale check.
10. NJSA and Team Purebred reserve the right to randomly test for the presence of unapproved drugs in swine entries.
11. Entries are due April 30. Late entries will be accepted as space warrants.
12. No entries accepted at the show.
13. Entry fees are non-refundable.
14. NSR, CPS, ABA, NSPA, NJSA and Team Purebred are not liable for accidents.
15. All WPX Junior National entries and checks (purebred and crossbred) must be mailed to NSR, Attention: Director of Junior Activities; P.O. Box 2417, West Lafayette, IN 47996-2417.

Exhibitor Requirements
1. All purebred hog exhibitors must be members of their respective junior associations – NJSA or Team Purebred.
2. Exhibitors must be 21 years of age or younger as of Jan. 1, 2008.
3. Exhibitors must wear their exhibitor numbers given to them at registration during the gilt show and showmanship.
4. If exhibitor is not present to show the animal, the animal cannot be exhibited unless approved by show officials.

Arrival/Dismissal
1. Participants must pen their entries in the designated area, even if they are entered in the open show.
2. No moving or switching of pen cards at the show. If special penning is required, these requests must be submitted in advance and approved by show officials. This system will allow us to find participants more quickly if problems arise.
3. All pigs will be released on Fri., June 6, after the sweepstakes ceremony.
4. Swine entries may not be released until the designated release time. If any swine leave the show early, the exhibitor and their family will not be allowed to compete in NJSA or Team Purebred activities for one year.

Additional Gilt Show Information
1. Breed classes will be broken according to farrowing dates, with class size as equal as possible.
2. Purebred gilts shown in the WPX Junior National are eligible to be exhibited in the open show and sold as long as they are double-entered in the name of the junior exhibitor. All double-entered gilts must be entered with both the World Pork Expo Junior National and the World Pork Expo Breed Shows (all open show entries must be submitted to the respective breed offices – NSR, CPS, ABA).
3. If animal is double-entered in the World Pork Expo, it must be entered in the junior exhibitor's name for both shows.

Purebred Gilt Requirements:
1. Purebred gilt entries must be registered Berkshire, Chester White, Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, Poland China, Spotted or Yorkshire gilts that are farrowed on or after Nov. 1, 2007.
2. Entries may be purchased females, but must be owned by the junior exhibitor, the exhibitor's family name, or exhibitor's farm name by April 30, 2008.
3. Gilts must be registered in the junior exhibitor's name, exhibitor's family name, or exhibitor's farm name.
4. Junior exhibitors must bring their original pedigree and a copy of their pedigree to check-in.
5. Substitutions will be allowed at the show.

Crossbred Breeding Gilt Requirements:
1. Crossbred gilts must weigh 375 pounds or less, and must weigh back within 15 pounds of their declared weight.
2. The top two crossbred gilts from each class are required to be offered for sale in crossbred sale on Saturday.
3. You must show one purebred barrow in order to show 1 or 2 crossbred gilts.

Market Animal Requirements (Purebred & Crossbred Barrows):
1. Purebred barrow entries must be registered Berkshire, Chester White, Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, Poland China, Spotted or Yorkshire barrows born Nov. 1, 2007, and after.
2.bsp; All barrows (purebred and crossbred) must weigh between 220 and 280 pounds.
3. Entries may be purchased barrows, but must be owned by the junior exhibitor, the exhibitor's family name, or
exhibitor's farm name by April 30, 2008.
4. Purebred barrows must be registered in the junior exhibitor's name, exhibitor's family name, or exhibitor's farm name.
5. Junior exhibitors must bring their original pedigree and a copy of their pedigree to check-in.
6. Substitutions will be allowed at the show.
7. You must show one purebred barrow in order to show 1 or 2 crossbred barrows.
8. All market hogs will be shown by declared weights at check-in. Each exhibitor will receive a weigh card that they must fill out with their market hog’s weight. Scales will be available at the show.
9. The top three market hogs in each class will be weighed back. All market hogs must weigh back in within 15 pounds of their declared weight.
10. This is not a terminal show. Exhibitors will be responsible for their own barrows.
11. If an exhibitor wishes to sell their market hog to a packer following the show, they must sign up at check-in.

Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace & Yorkshire Entries:
1. All animals are to be guaranteed negative of the stress gene to be exhibited at a NSR or NJSA event.
2. NSR and NJSA reserve the right to randomly collect a DNA profile on exhibited animals for parentage verification at any event where registered animals are exhibited. This collection will be supervised by NSR or NJSA representatives.
3. All breed champions, reserve champions and/or any randomly selected gilts may be blood tested for presence of the stress gene, parentage verification, and breed purity as DNA technology becomes available.
4. The overall champion and reserve champion barrow and/or any randomly selected barrows may be blood tested for presence of the stress gene, parentage verification, and breed purity as DNA technology becomes available.
5. Champion and reserve champion overall premiums as well as breed champion and reserve breed champion premiums
will not be awarded until the DNA results are verified at the NSR office.
6. Any gilts that fail these DNA tests for the stress gene, parentage verification or breed purity will be asked to forfeit all gilt show premiums and awards. Showmanship standings, however, will not be affected by failed test results.
7. Failed test results will not be publicized except in the normal listing of cancelled pedigrees that is published in the NSR newsletter, For the Record, and in the NJSA newsletter, The Pinnacle.
8. Gilts must meet all registration eligibility requirements of their respective breed associations. NSR field staff or qualified NSR representative will inspect all gilts for breed eligibility.
9. Any gilts that do not meet eligibility requirements may not be used for showmanship. All efforts will be made to help these youth find replacements to use in showmanship.

Berkshire Entries: Berkshire gilts and barrows must have negative stress status denoted on the pedigree. All open gilts are expected to be open. Any gilt shown in the junior show could be pregnancy checked. Any gilt found to be bred at the show would forfeit all premium money and would be subject to being banned from all Team Purebred events for the next two years.

Chester White, Poland China Spotted Entries: All Chester White, Poland China and Spotted entries must meet breed registration requirements and stress requirements as determined by their breed’s board of directors. All open gilts are expected to be open. Any gilt shown in the junior show could be pregnancy checked. Any gilt found to be bred at the show would forfeit all premium money and would be subject to being banned from all Team Purebred events for the next two years.

Showmanship Contest:
1. All contestants must be members of the NJSA or Team Purebred.
2. Divisions will be randomly broken into classes according to entries, with no more than 20 exhibitors per class.
3. Gilts or barrows used for the showmanship contest are required to come from a junior exhibitor or open show entry. It is the responsibility of the participants to make arrangements with another junior member or open show exhibitor to use their gilt or barrow.
4. The divisions will be as of Jan. 1: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12); and Novice (8 & Under).
5. Any gilts or barrows that do not meet breed eligibility requirements may not be used for showmanship. All efforts will be made to help these youth find replacements to use in showmanship.

Swine Judging Contest:
1. All contestants must be members of the NJSA or Team Purebred.
2. Teams must be made up of three to four contestants from the SAME age division. The top three scores will count toward the team score.
3. Parents are NOT allowed near the judging rings. Assistants will be available to novice or first-time judges who may not understand how to mark their cards.
4. Novice exhibitors will judge two classes and answer questions on one class. The novice will have their own separate contest. A teaching class will precede the contest and officials will be given immediately after their cards are turned in.
5. Junior exhibitors will judge six classes (four breeding and two market) and answer two sets of questions.
6. Intermediate exhibitors will judge six classes (four breeding and two market) and give one set of oral reasons and answer two sets of questions.
7. Senior exhibitors will judge six classes (four breeding and two market) and give three sets of oral reasons.
8. All vulvas and underlines will be considered sound. Please note any differences and be prepared to talk them in oralreasons or answer questions about them.
9. Soundness is to be judged as is unless otherwise specified on contest day.
10. No talking at any time throughout the contest, except between the contestants and group leaders. If you are caught talking one time, you will be warned. The second time you are caught talking, your card will be taken away. The third time you are caught talking, you will be asked to leave the contest. This rule is crucial for this contest to be fair for all contestants.

NJSA Sweepstakes Contest:
1. All contestants must be members of the NJSA.
2. Sweepstakes contestants must declare their intent to compete in the sweepstakes contest at registration in order to receive points.
3. Sweepstakes contestants must compete in all three contests. The exhibitor must show a purebred Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace or Yorkshire gilt and compete in the judging contest and showmanship contest.
4. Points will be contributed from the gilt show, showmanship contest and judging contest. Ties will be broken as follows: judging contest, showmanship, gilt show.
5. Sweepstakes contestants may receive 5 bonus points for showing a barrow in addition to competing in the three main contests (gilt show, showmanship, judging contest). Points are not awarded similarly for the barrow show – exhibitor only receives an optional 5 points for participating in the barrow show. If a barrow weighs out of class, the exhibitor will not receive bonus points toward the sweepstakes contest (unless they exhibit other barrows who do not weigh out).
6. Sweepstakes points will be awarded as follows:
Gilt Show: 1st: 100; 2nd: 90; 3rd: 80; 4th:70; 5th: 60; 6th-participation: 50
Showmanship: 1st: 100; 2nd: 95; 3rd: 90; 4th: 85; 5th: 80; 6th: 75; 7th: 70; 8th: 65; 9th: 60; 10th: 55; 11th-participation: 50
Judging Contest: 1st: 100; 2nd: 95; 3rd: 90; 4th: 85; 5th: 80; 6th: 75; 7th: 70; 8th: 65; 9th: 60; 10th: 55; 11th-participation: 50

Team Purebred Sweepstakes Contest:
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. Sweepstakes contestants must declare their intent to compete in the sweepstakes contest at registration.
3. Sweepstakes contestants must compete in all four contests. The exhibitor must show a purebred Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China or Spotted gilt or barrow, compete in the showmanship contest, judging contest and written exam. Written exam details will be given at registration.
4. Points will be distributed from the hog show, showmanship contest, judging contest and poster contest. Ties will be broken as follows: judging contest, showmanship, poster contest. 5. Sweepstakes points will be awarded as follows:
Participation in Gilt or Barrow Show: 100 points
Written Exam: 1st: 100, 2nd: 90, 3rd: 80, 4th: 70, 5th: 60, 6th:-participation: 50
Showmanship: 1st: 100, 2nd: 95, 3rd: 90, 4th: 85, 5th: 80, 6th: 75, 7th: 70, 8th: 65, 9th: 60, 10th: 55, 11th-participation: 50
Judging Contest: 1st: 100, 2nd: 95, 3rd: 90, 4th: 85, 5th: 80, 6th: 75, 7th: 70, 8th: 65, 9th: 60, 10th: 55, 11th-participation: 50
