FTA Card Blood Sample Collection Procedure
(Use one card per animal)
1. Blood may be collected from animals when doing routine blood testing by a veterinarian, or the breeder may elect to collect the sample:
- If during routine blood testing, drops of blood from the syringe can be placed on each of the four circles on the card.
- If a breeder is taking the sample, a vein on the back of the ear should be located and cleaned to prevent contamination. A prick can be made with a lancet or hypodermic needle. Allow the drops of blood to cover each of the four circles. Be careful not to contaminate the blood sample with dirt or foreign material other than blood.
2. Record the animals identification on the card with Breeder, Breed, Ear Notch and Registration Number.
3. Fold the card flap back so the card flap does not contact the blood until the sample has dried. Allow the card to dry at room temperature. (At least one hour, or best overnight).
4. After the card is dry, cover the sample area with the flap, place the sample(s) in a sealed sandwich bag to keep samples dry, and mail to the address indicated below. Cold packs are not necessary.
