General Questions

Q: What is the National Youth Leadership Conference?

A: The National Youth Leadership Conference is a three day conference where youth participants attend educational sessions, tour agricultural facilities, and make new friends that share a passion for the agricultural industry. This conference moves location on a yearly basis.

Q: Who can attend?

A: Youth participants ages 14-21 as of Jan. 1, of that year, are welcome to attend the event.

Q: What is the Pork Checkoff Travel Scholarship?

A: The Pork Checkoff Travel Scholarship is sponsored by the National Pork Board and is awarded to first time NYLC attendees. Up to 10 youth participants are eligible for this $200 travel scholarship. This is awarded on the Sunday of NYLC during the closing session.

Q: When is the Pork Checkoff Travel Scholarship due?

A: The Pork Checkoff Travel Scholarship is due on the entry deadline. You will send that to Ellen Knauth at ellen@nationalswine.com.

Registration Questions

Q: What is the registration fee? What does this fee include?

A: The registration fee is $200 per youth participant. This includes their meals, hotel rooms, and travel expenses from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon.

Q: How do you register for the event?

A: The entry form will be live the second week of February on the NSR Website.

Lodging and Travel Questions

Q: Are hotel rooms provided for the youth participants or do we need to find them ourselves?

A: Hotel rooms are provided for the youth participants. The Director of Junior Activities will create a rooming list ahead of time so that all youth participants are roomed by gender and age.

The NJSA will only cover rooms for Friday night until Sunday morning. If participants arrive on Thursday evening, they will be responsible for the cost of that room. HOWEVER, the Director of Junior Shows will still book those rooms for participants and will send a bill within a week of the conclusion of the event. This ensures that all participants receive the discounted group rate. If youth participants due arrive on Thursday night, please let Ellen Knauth, the Director of Junior Shows, know ASAP at ellen@nationalswine.com

Q: Are we responsible for getting to and from the airport?

A: The NJSA will provide pick up and drop off assistance for all members traveling to the National Youth Leadership Conference. If you are flying in, it is very important that you get that information to Kaley Bontrager, Director of Junior Shows, ASAP at ellen@nationalswine.com. She will put your pick up and drop off information into an excel spreadsheet and will email that to you a week prior to the event.

 

Arrival and Departure Questions

Q: When should youth participants and adult leaders arrive?

A: Youth participants and adult leaders should arrive by noon on the first day to go through the registration line. The conference will begin right after lunch so please make sure that you have eaten lunch at the time of your arrival.

Q: When are is the conference completed?

A: The conference will conclude at noon on the last day. All youth participants and adult leaders are excused at this time.

 

Adult Leader/Parent Questions

Q: What is the difference between being an Adult Leader and a Parent?

A: An adult leader is someone that will attend all the conference for the entire weekend. A parent is someone who is driving or flying with a youth participant, but will not be a part of the events throughout the weekend.

Q: Is there a cost associated with being an Adult Leader?

A: There is a $100 fee associated with being an adult leader. This fee will help cover travel and food costs. Adult leaders will also be responsible for the cost of their hotel room. HOWEVER, the director of junior activities will still book those rooms and will send a bill within a month of the conclusion of the event. This ensures that everyone will receive the discounted group rate. Q: Do Adult Leaders and Parents have to sign up ahead of time?

A: Both adult leaders and parents are required to sign up ahead of time. This can be completed by going through the same process as the youth participants; however, you will mark the box that is titled “Adult Leader/Parent.” By completing this entry form, the Director of Junior Shows is able to book hotel rooms and plan meals and travel accordingly.

Q: When is the “Adult Leader” fee due?

A: The adult leader fee will be due during registration. However, it is very important that you fill out the entry form that is online also.

Q: Do Adult Leaders and Parents have to book their own rooms?

A: Adult Leaders and parents do not have to book their own rooms. The Director of Junior Shows will book these rooms and will send a bill within a month of the conclusion of the event. This ensures that everyone will receive the discounted group rate.
