2018 World Pork Expo Exhibitors

GENERAL SHOW INFORMATION, HEALTH REGULATIONS

Thank you for submitting entries for the 2018 World Pork Expo open show and sale. With over 6,000 total entries submitted for the junior and open shows, we are once again expecting record numbers. Space limitations will require gilts to be penned two head per pen while boars will still be penned separately. Adjustments regarding pen space and location may be made. We are confident we can accommodate all exhibitors with your cooperation.

BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE SHOW, PLEASE REMEMBER!

  • Please double check CVIs (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) to ensure all information is accurate and all requirements are met. ALL CVIs MUST BE ISSUED ON OR AFTER FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2018.
    • MAKE SURE ANIMALS MEET ALL TEST REQUIREMENTS (BRUCELLOSIS REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED)
    • It is best to provide your veterinarian with a copy of the included World Pork Expo health requirements and check to ensure each requirement is included on the CVI.
    • ALL animals entering the Iowa State Fairgrounds MUST be listed on an official, interstate health certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) issued by a licensed, accredited veterinarian.
    • Loads containing swine that do not meet all health requirements will not be admitted to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. This includes animals being delivered that are not exhibited at the event.
    • A complete list of up-to-date health regulations are included in this letter.
  • ALL animals must be tagged with an official, permanently-numbered, federally-approved ear tag.

  • Crossbred boars are required to be DNA stress tested. (crossbred gilts are NOT required to be stress tested)
    • Please bring your documented crossbred boar stress test results with you to present during check-in. 
    • The stress status of each crossbred boar will be listed in the show and sale catalog.
    • For information on stress test procedures for crossbred boars, contact Whitney Webb, whitney@nationalswine.com.
    • Purebred NSR entries are not required to be stress tested prior to exhibition.
  • Please make sure all purebred entries meet their respective breed eligibility standards.
    • In particular, make sure all NSR purebred boars and gilts possess six functional teats on each side.
  • Bedding will be provided and additional shavings will be available for purchase.

 

UPON ARRIVAL: UNLOADING TIMES, CVI & ANIMAL INSPECTION, PENNING, TRAILER PARKING

  • There will be cutoff times for entry arrival on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening for vet inspection. Please plan accordingly to arrive during the posted times below.
    • MONDAY, JUNE 4 (enter through Gate 2 on North side of fairgrounds off of University Ave.)
      • 4 p.m.: Entry arrival will be closed for the evening (all junior entries MUST be on grounds by 4 p.m.)
    • TUESDAY, JUNE 5 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.: Open show entries may arrive
    • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • 7 a.m.-7 p.m.: Open show entries may arrive
    • THURSDAY, JUNE 7 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • 6 a.m.-8 a.m.: Open show entries may arrive
      • All open show entries must be on grounds by 8 a.m
  • Upon entering the Iowa State Fairgrounds, the official show veterinarian will inspect animals and original CVIs.
    • Please have animals’ ORIGINAL CVIs and test chart results ready for inspection upon arriving.
    • Only original CVIs will be approved by inspectors.
    • No animals are allowed to be unloaded prior to inspection.
  • Pens will be pre-assigned to all open show exhibitors.
  • Please pen entries in your designated pens and be sure to pen two gilts in each pen. (Boars will receive individual pens.) Due to space limitations, tack pens will not be available.
  • Pen dimensions vary in size (6’ x 6’) and (5’ x 6’).
  • If your plans have changed and you are not bringing entries, please contact whitneyh@nationalswine.com .
  • ALL Trailers will be parked in a lot located northeast of the fairgrounds.
    • After unloading, exit the fairgrounds and travel east on Dean Avenue.  Turn left at the campgrounds gate and follow the signs to trailer parking in the Northeast lot. DO NOT PARK IN THE CAMPGROUND!
    • THERE WILL NO TRAILER PARKING IN THE INFIELD!
    • If you are leaving animals on the trailer for delivery, you will be required to park in the Northeast Lot. There is no more or electricity or water available in this lot so plan accordingly. 

 

CHECK-IN FOR WORLD PORK EXPO OPEN SHOW

  • NSR exhibitors are required to go through open show check-in during the posted times below.
    • MONDAY, JUNE 4 from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.: Junior & Open Show Registration (cattle barn)
    • TUESDAY, JUNE 5 from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Open Show Registration (swine barn NSR office)
    • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Open Show Registration (swine barn NSR office)
    • THURSDAY, JUNE 7 from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Open Show Registration (swine barn NSR office)
  • Items needed for check-in:
    • Original CVIs:
      • Please bring original CVI that has been approved by health officials.
      • Exhibitors will need to submit original CVIs for each open show animal.
      • Copies of the original CVIs can be made in the check-in line.
    • Stress Test Results (crossbred boars only):
      • Crossbred boar exhibitors must present a documented stress test result during check-in.
      • Stress status of crossbred boars will be listed in the show and sale catalogs.
  • A lot number will be assigned to each animal entered in the World Pork Expo.
    • Please know lot number of each cross boar prior to bringing boars to scales for weighing.
    • Lot numbers will be painted on the animal by exhibitors. Paint brands will be provided by show staff.
    • Please paint dark colored animals (Durocs, Hampshires and dark crossbreds) with provided yellow paint.
    • Please paint light colored animals (Landrace, Yorkshires and light crossbreds) with provided green paint.
    • ALL animals must have legible paint numbers prior to the open show and sale for identification.
    • Please return paint brand numbers to table outside open show office, once finished using them.
  • NSR Crossbred boars will be weighed on Thursday, June 7th from 8:30 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. There will be no scanning. If you have a Crossbred Gilt that is not entered in the Junior show, please bring your gilt to weigh at this time. Purebred boars and gilts will be shown by age and will not be weighed or scanned.
    • Please go through the check-in line and have your boar’s lot number prior to bringing boars to the scales.
    • Crossbred gilts must turn in a declared weight. If exhibiting a double-entered gilt in the junior and open shows, the junior show declared weight must be used.

2018 WORLD PORK EXPO HEALTH REGULATIONS

  1. EACH ANIMAL ENTERING THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS MUST BE LISTED ON AN OFFICIAL, INTERSTATE CERTIFICATE OF VETERINARY INSPECTION (CVI) ISSUED BY A LICENSED, ACCREDITED VETERINARIAN. THIS INCLUDES DELIVERY ANIMALS. LOADS CONTAINING SWINE WITHOUT ALL BELOW MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE GRANTED ACCESS TO THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS.
    1. All animals and original CVIs will be inspected by show veterinarian and show staff prior to unloading.
    2. Multiple animals may be listed on one original CVI. Photocopies of CVIs can be made during show check-in for each animal after the show veterinarian has approved CVIs upon arrival.
    3. CVIs must be issued on or after Friday, May 11, 2018.
    4. A permit number is not required from the Iowa state veterinarian’s office to move animals into the World Pork Expo.
  2. CVIs MUST BE ISSUED ON OR AFTER FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2018, WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
    1. Name and 911 address (location of swine, No P.O. Box) of consignor; consigned to the:
      World Pork Expo, Iowa State Fairgrounds, East 30th Street and University Ave., Des Moines, Iowa, 50317.
    2. ALL SWINE being exhibited at the World Pork Expo MUST be officially identified with an official, federally approved ear tag. The animal’s ear tag ID MUST be listed on CVI. 840 ear tags are preferred. For more information on federally recognized ear tags, visit nationalswine.com/shows/ear_tags.php.
    3. Each animal shall be individually identified by ear notch and ear notch MUST be listed on CVI
    4. Health status of animal, including dates of required tests and vaccinations must be listed.
    5. A premise ID number MUST be included on CVI.
    6. The cell phone number of your veterinarian who issued the CVI MUST be included on the CVI.
    7. ALL CVIs MUST CARRY THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS:
      “Farm or origin of the swine:
      1. Has not had pseudorabies or swine dysentery in the last 12 months
      2. Has not had any clinical signs or diagnosis of TGE or PEDv in the last 60 days
      3. Feeds no raw garbage and uses no PRV vaccine
      4. Is not under quarantine for any disease condition
      5. Has not had vesicular stomatitis diagnosed within 10 miles of farm or origin in the last 30 days
  3. REQUIRED TESTS AND VACCINATIONS:
    1. PSEUDORABIES (PRV) TESTING:
      1. ALL ANIMALS MUST be individually tested for PRV on or after Friday, May 11, 2018.
      2. All official identification of animal (sex, ear tag and ear notch) needs to be included on the pseudorabies test chart.
      3. Animals must test PRV-negative with all results on the dated CVI.
      4. The official PRV test chart must be provided along with your CVI.
      5. Either the ELISA (gB ELISA), ALA or S/N tests are acceptable. Differentiable ELISA (g1 ELISA) test will NOT be accepted. 
      6. (Even if animals originate from a pseudorabies class-free state or PRV-qualified herd, each animal MUST be individually tested for pseudorabies. However, brucellosis testing requirements, as detailed below, are different.)
    2. BRUCELLOSIS TESTING:
      1. All animals must be individually tested for brucellosis on or after Friday, May 11, 2018
        UNLESS:
      2. Animals originate from a validated brucellosis free herd
        1. If the herd of origin is brucellosis validated, the validation numbers must appear on the CVI and the most recent quarterly herd test date (month, day and year) must be stated on the CVI.
        2. Swine tested must have all official identification (sex, ear tag and ear notch) along with date blood sample was drawn (month, day and year) listed on CVI.
        3. Animals must test brucellosis negative with all results on the dated CVI.
        4. The RAP, Standard Plate, Standard Tube or BAPA brucellosis tests are all accepted.
    3. VACCINATIONS:
      1. All breeding swine coming to the show MUST be vaccinated against leptospirosis (6-way) including bratislava and erysipelas.
        1. The complete date of vaccination MUST be listed on the health certificate. Market animals should not be vaccinated.
      2. It is strongly recommended that breeding animals are vaccinated for swine influenza.
  • In some instances, these requirements are in addition to the state of Iowa regulations. However, they are necessary in meeting other state requirements for purchasers of open show animals through sales as animals are re-consigned to new destinations.
